Interested in discovering more about the mind? Want to be able to change how you feel and respond to things? In this short audio section I am explain ’submodalities’ - the internal coding system we have for our experiences. This 4 minute video comes from a live training where I am discussing a simple approach to communicating and influencing. When we are plagued by a lack of confidence, it is almost impossible to live the life we want to live. If you think about it, the most successful people in our society have one thing in common: they believe in themselves and their ability to achieve their goals. Although even highly successful people probably have days when they feel a bit of self-doubt, it is hard to imagine someone like Barack Obama achieving what once seemed like an impossible dream, of becoming the first African-American President of the United States, without a large dose of confidence. The same is true for all of us, even if our goals are less ambitious. Without self-belief, we are unlikely to get that dream job, loving relationship, financial security, or any of the abundance we would like to experience in our lives. Using NLP to boost your confidence is the first step towards achieving your life’s ambitions, and enhancing your experience of the world and the experience of others around you. A lack of self-confidence is often rooted in the fear that being confident would cause pain, either to you as an individual or to other people. Common thought processes surrounding this fear (however subconscious they may be) include:
These thoughts come from anxieties surrounding the possibility of failure or rejection, and may lead to an unconscious desire to sabotage our own success. By learning NLP, you can turn your fears around and transform them into confidence. Begin by identifying a solid motivation for changing your habit of low self-esteem, and recognising the thoughts that lie at the heart of your fear of being confident. Let us imagine, for example, that you want a new relationship and are being held back by your fear of rejection. You can use NLP to turn the pain of rejection that you fear into pleasure, at the thought of what you will gain through being confident:
If you go through this process, fully immersing yourself in the experience of both having and not having what it is that you will gain through confidence, your brain will automatically start to reach for the more positive experience and your behaviour will change accordingly. We as human beings instinctively seek pleasure and avoid pain, so by consciously changing our pleasure/pain associations, we can enter into new behavioural patterns that benefit our lives and help us to fulfil our dreams.
The philosophy is simple; you associate smoking with pleasure, you associate quitting with pain. Reverse it and you won’t need to quit, you will simply stop as you will take no pleasure in the activity anymore. Here are the first steps. Find an image, sound or feeling that repulses you about smoking. This might be a photo of tar in the lungs, it might be a cross section of a blocked artery, it might be the funeral of a loved one who died of cancer. As unpleasant as it sounds you will be finding a thought connected to smoking that truly repulses you. Pick up a cigarette and think about this thought. Every time you take a drag make the image more intense, experience the feelings more. Put a reminder on your cigarette box and force yourself to live the consequences of your smoking every time you light up. If you commit to this technique you will be smoking nothing in no time. Another interpretation of this technique is to eat a tin of cat food with every cigarette, it’s disgusting, I’ve done it, and it works. However, this is only half the process. With the money you save from giving up you have to truly reward yourself. Plan a dream holiday, look at the gadget you will buy with the money and every time you usually have a cigarette get your high off the thought of the great life you will have without smoking. These instructions are simple and we give a far more developed tutorial in our seminars. What we find is when people learn how to quit smoking using NLP they take the techniques in to the rest of their life and find ways to motivate themselves in to achieving incredible things. The fact is NLP is an adaptable philosophy that will not only help you reach your own personal goals, but the way you communicate, the way you think, the way you live your life will help the people around you to live the life of their dreams too.
NLP language patterns when used correctly are powerful tools of persuasion. The principle is simple. Construct sentence that have commands hidden within them. For example, when trying to build rapport use phrases such as “you, like me, believe honesty is really important”. On the surface this sentence is saying that you are two similar people but also, underneath you have embedded the instruction “you like me”. This can be reinforced with supporting gestures, hand signals that refer to the person on the “you” and refer to yourself on the “me”. The gestures are important as non verbal communication is rarely questioned. The person you are talking to will hear the precise meaning of the sentence but with the non verbal reinforcement the brain will here the command “you like me”, and this will be accepted as fact. Does NLP work with different languages? This specific example can be adapted to most European languages, however, the principles are universal. Are there more friendly NLP languages? That is, are there languages better suited to NLP? In our experience, no. Every language we encounter, including English, has limitations when it comes to embedded commands, however, every language also has enormous flexibility, and it is really down to the skill of the NLP practitioner when it comes to what can be achieved. The fact is that this technique is a way of talking directly to the subconscious of your companion and the results can be astounding. The final aspect of NLP language patterns that we are to introduce you to today is frame control. Does NLP work with different languages? This technique undoubtedly will. This week go away and start constructing your sentences around the reality that you want to be believe. Car salesman talk as if it is a fact that you will be buying a car today. There is no doubt in the way they talk, and this reduces the doubt in the clients mind. If you want people to believe you are a natural leader then tell stories that promote this as the absolute truth. This brings us to a central point of NLP; your belief controls your reality, and this is a principle that is truly universal. | ||
